Lake Hume & Dam Wall (24.7km)

Bring your bathers down to the lake and enjoy some swimming, or lounging by the shore reading this year’s bestseller. Have your camera on hand to steal a few spectacular shots from one of the lookouts around the lake. Take advantage of the local fishing charters or even hire a boat and head to your own fishing nook, or maybe just watch the sunset over glassy waters with your family.

Corryong (109km)

Aspiring country singers and country music lovers alike will be right at home at Corryong. Home to Jack Riley, a local stockman who it’s claimed was the inspiration for the famous Banjo Patterson poem ‘The Man from Snowy River’; Corryong is worth the hour and 30 minute drive for The Man from Snowy River Museum. It provides interesting insight into this local legend and the history of the region.

Bandiana Army Museum (7.7km)

The Bandiana Army Museum houses a magnificent display of Australia’s military history. Located on the Gaza Ridge Barracks, the museum provides an extensive display of military medals and uniforms, armoured vehicles, and anti-aircraft and field guns. Open Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 4.30pm (excluding some major holidays).

Beechworth (50.7km)

Try your luck at some gold prospecting in one of North East Victoria’s preserved gold rush towns. Beechworth is located at the gateway to the Victorian Alps and contains a vibrant mix of cafes, restaurants, boutique stores and galleries, and is host to many festivals throughout the year. Venture further into the Beechworth historic wine region’s small vineyards to experience excellent chardonnay, pinot noir and other cool-climate wine varieties.

Rutherglen Wine Region (57.3km)

Explore over 20 wineries (responsibly, of course) in Rutherglen. While there are many traditional wine styles to be found in the region, the area is also producing exciting new whites such as marsanne and viognier, while tempranillo and zinfandel add to the varieties of reds. Visit the cellar doors with a designated driver, book a local wine tour, or try the Pedal to Produce cycle trail to sample the best wine and produce from the region.

The Bonegilla Migrant Expierence (1.8km) 

Drop by the first home for over 300,000 migrants who were misplaced in Europe after the Second World War. The migrants lived in army bunks while they learnt English and looked for employment. Today, Bonegilla is a public memory place, and tourism attraction, providing insights into post-war migration, refugee experiences, and honouring contributions made by migrants in the on-going formation of our multi-cultural society.

High Country Rail Trail: (Various lengths)

You can Ride or Walk though some of the best country areas with the High Rail Trail which  traverses farmland near the shores of Lake Hume and forest further up at Shelley, as well as Huon Reserve ,Tallangatta  and  Derbyshire. The trail is undulating  with some moderate gradients. The Derbyshire to Shelley section is all uphill at the steepest gradient trains could manage. Trail surface is of varying quality.
